Please consider going to Africa for co-op. I really think you could gain some valuable experience in many fields of engineering. For instance, as a Civil you might have the chance to build 4-storey scaffolding out of sticks and rope. Or you might be part of the 60-man workforce paid $1.23/day to haul water up and down ramps to make cement since motorized machinery is too expensive. Important professional experiences that you really can’t get in Canada, where labor laws and Workplace Safety Committees make things so difficult.
